Zen means dhyana , since chinese/tibetan people cannot pronounce complex consonants also bcoz of lack of some consanants , the word dhyana/dhyan got germinated to Zen. There is an intermediate word in pali from which Zen came. u can check wiki.
And thousand in jap is sen not Zen , sen-nin = thousand people
